SlowFood.Org attributes the Ecologist as the source for this story. In it, the article states that Kenya will become the fourth African nation, after Egypt, South Africa and Burkina Faso, to allow the importation and production of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Though environmental organizations strongly oppose the move, the Kenyan government questions how they can allow millions to go hungry when GMO crops offer an opportunity to fill the gap in national agricultural production. According to Slow Food vice-president, John Kariuki, one of the major problems identified with GMOs are the restrictions and limitations that seed manufactures put on the sale of GMO seeds. Seed are often sold only through dealers and are sterilized to keep them from reproducing, thereby forcing farmers to return to the dealer year after year.
